Screencasting with Jing

by_(sam)_-_6966327_59faae5d19_b.jpgJing is a new screen recording tool from the makers of Snag it, and Camtasia. (JingProject.com)

It seemed so easy when we unwrapped the box ..
1) make a recording, save in SWF format
2) upload it direct into wikispaces
3) let your people know where it is and encourage them to watch ..

Here's a video taking the position that it's all very easy and straightforward.

Challenges

But through trial and error (mainly by Lisa at Moreland), we've discovered some serious things to beware. In short:

1. The software doesn't work if you're offline.
2. The videos can't be easily re-sized ..
3. save the file to your local disk, you have to do it immediately
4. The software doesn't automatically log you out ..

(Plus lengthier detail ..

  1. The software doesn't work if you're offline. Yes a desktop application that makes you log in.
Discovered this when my laptop wouldn't connect over at Moreland adult education ..
    - but the Jing people don't need your login until you attempt to upload into Screencast.com .. so why not wait until that point??!
  2. The videos can't be re-sized .. so you need to key in the exact original height and width, when embedding in wikispaces.
.. or you could record a small portion of your screen, ie less than 600x600 pixels.
Alternatively resize your screen resolution to 800x600 before recording.
  3. If you want to save the file to your local disk, you have to do it immediately .. if you leave it and come back later, that option is gone.
  4. The software doesn't automatically log you out .. so anyone using the app on a public machine will upload to your screencast account.
. in fact it's tricky to find out how to log out of the software.

How to log out of Jing .. on a public computer

Here's a video showing how to log out of Jing .. (Whoops .. it loops over and over. You'll have to stop it yourself.)

Download the video file here:
how to log out of jing v3 .swf
(You'll need a flash video player to play it though, eg EOLSoft Flash Movie Player)

Other options?

If these challenges are too much, could be time to try out CamStudio instead .. or one of the other screen casting applications.
